Background:

Dheefsin Agro-Livestock Group Cooperative abbreviated as “TFC” is a joint venture small scale farming vegetables/fruits and fattening livestock cooperative consisting of 5 different farming cooperatives united under a single umbrella, based in the outskirts of Galkayo, Fardacune 40km north-west of Galkayo. The cooperative was established on April 04, 2015 with the focus on creating alternative sustainable livelihood option for the food insecure displaced pasture community households after lost their livestock products during the prolonged dry season.

Challenges:

As the first integrated farming production cooperative there are undoubtedly challenges that need to be overcome. 

The Cooperative lacks the following equipment:
1. Submersible pump 15HP.
2. Submersible cables.
3. Pipes 3 inch 30pcs.
4. Solar panels.
5. Backup power generator Perkin 60 KVA.
6. Elevated concrete water tank 50 cubic meter for irrigation.
7. Two animal water troughs for goats/sheep and camels.
8. Watch man room and power generator’s room.
9. Fencing wire mesh for wildlife mitigation.
10 Baler machine for grass rolling.

Opportunities are the followings:
1. The farm’s soil is very fertile and virgin very suitable for farming
2. The sun shine is permanent through whole year.
3. Water is available.
4. Galkayo market demand of Vegetable/Fruits and fattened Livestock is very high.
5. Access of transport for the products is only 45km of tarmac road from the Farm to
Galkayo.
6. Metrological allows to grow the farm whole the year.

Livestock Production and Trade

Livestock related activities are the mainstay of Puntland contributing about 70% of the country’s GDP and 60% of the population relying on livestock and livestock related activities.
